Would the government warn us if there was an asteroid heading towards our earth?

since there are so many facts all over the internet about comet coming as soon as 2012 which is only 3 years from now and that it will cause world wide destruction with pole shifting and cause disturbance. If they knew this would happen, would Obama tell our government to warn the public about this
